Course objectives:

To acquaint student with the most common types of construction materials and elements, their properties and procedures for their measurement and evaluation, and the principles of their use in building structures.

Elaboration of semester work in the required quality and its presentation.

Demonstration of sufficient knowledge of the semestral subject and the ability to apply them in the context.

Content
|
1. Introduction. Terminology, legislation, types of construction materials according to use, raw materials, requirements, methods for measurement, testing, evaluation, certification and quality control. The building structure, its composition and properties. Usability, durability, recycling, disposal.
2. Structure of construction materials, fraction, grain line, density, porosity, density, bulk density, absorbency, anisotropy and other properties associated with the structure, volume and weight. Measurement and evaluation of these properties. Destructive and non-destructive testing.
3. Mechanical parameters of construction materials. Types of stress, working diagram, Hook's law, strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of deformity, stiffness, transverse deformation, brittleness, toughness, notch. Statics, dynamics, fatigue. Testing and evaluation of mechanical parameters.
4. Physical parameters of construction materials. Toughness, longitudinal and volumetric expansion, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, vapor permeability, frost resistance, transmittance, absorption and light reflectance.
5. Thermal technical properties of construction materials. Types of heat spread, thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, thermal absorption, heat diffusion, emissivity. Materials for thermal insulations.
6. Chemical properties of construction materials. Degradation processes in buildings, damage of materials. Corrosion, its types, appearance and consequences. Flammability, heat resistance, flame resistance. Material compatibility.
7. Technological properties of construction materials. Ductility, formability, weldability, machinability. Technological principles of building structures.
8. Concrete, reinforced concrete, fiber concrete, special concretes. Technology of monolith, prefamonolite, prefabrication.
9. Masonry and its components. Masonry elements, binders. Traditional masonry types, modern masonry types.
10. Metals for building structures. Construction elements, additional elements, connecting elements.
11. Wood for building structures. Square edged timber, glued laminated timber.
12. Plastics for building structures and elements. Board elements, foils, profiles, special types.
13. Other and special construction materials. Glass, insulations, bitumens, resins, composites, modern materials. Ecological aspects of the life cycle of construction materials in buildings structures.
