Course objectives:

the student:
- will get acquainted with designing masonry structures
- will understand the principles used structures, materials and structural elements
- will learn about the load-bearing structures of brick, light concrete and others

The student will elaborate and hand in a semestral project of an adequate level
Credit obtained in previous years of study is not accepted

Active knowledge of the content of the course, ability to apply the knowledge to solve practical exercises

1. Masonry structures - basic information and history
2. Basic properties, using masonry structures - bearing walls and non-bearing walls, marking
3. Materials - properties, tests. Masonry units, bricks, stones, blocks, mortars, concrete infill, reinforced steel
4. Mechanical properties and testing - press, bending, shear
5. Process of designing structures by standard ČSN EN 1996 - general rules for reinforced and unreinforced structures
6. Design of masonry structures - ultimate limit states, characteristic strength of masonry
7. Design of structures - loading bearing walls, walls subjected to bending, shear walls
8. Walls - slenderness ratio, idealization of the structure, serviceability limit states,
9. Designing and positioning masonry, temperature changes
10. Simplified calculation method for unreinforced masonry structures
11. Reinforced masonry structures, reinforced units, prestressed masonry

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
know and be familiar with the loading of buildings |
know and describe building materials, especially stone, bricks, blocks, concrete, reinforcement, mortar |
know and recognize structural systems of buildings |
identify load-bearing structures of the building, all 5 types (sloping, horizontal, roof, foundations, roof) |
know and recognize building structures in the scope of teaching the subject Construction 1 and 2 |
Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
orient yourself in the construction drawings |

- knows masonry structures and their materials
- is able to choose appropriate structure for using in a project and in a site
- applies knowledge of the course ZDK to structural design

know and be familiar with the design of a masonry building according to the standard of Eurocode 6 |
know the distribution of masonry elements and mortars and their impact on the characteristic compressive strength of masonry |
know the principles and conditions for the implementation of masonry structures, including areas with the possibility of earthquakes |
know the procedures for calculating the load-bearing capacity of masonry in compression, eccentric pressure, shear and bending |

to design the masonry structure of the building |
design and assess masonry structures of buildings according to valid standards of Eurocode 6 |
calculate the vertical compressive strength of masonry for individual materials |
define the conditions for the execution of masonry |
specify related and system constructions such as lintels, ceilings, wreaths and stiffeners. |
