This course is based on the assumption that nationalism is primarily a political principle and therefore focuses mainly on the theoretical aspects of nationalism with regard to political science and international relations. Students will be first socialized with basic terminology (nation, ethnic and national minority, national movement, nation state, national self-determination, ethnic separatism and irredentism, ethnic conflict or genocide) which will prepare them for discussion of the basic paradigms of nationalism and theories of ethnicity. The course will consequently focus on the main existing approaches to nationalism - primordialism, modernism, ethnosymbolism and postmodern approaches, their confrontation and critical reflection. Nationalism will also be discussed in relation to relevant segments of political theory, especially theories of totalitarianism, decolonization, modernization, transitions to democracy, democracy, multiculturalism and citizenship. The course will also relate nationalism with issues relevant for international politics (e.g. sovereignty, self-determination, secession, irredentism, religious fundamentalism and the role of nation states in a globalizing world). Different types of nations, nation states and nationalisms will be introduced and discussed critically, ranging from concepts trying to deal with pre-modern phenomena to the issues of the globalized era. |
